I guess you're supposed to graph this and explain how you did it.
Starting with y = -2(x-1)2+5, that is a parabola with
vertex (1, 5)
[y = a(x-h)2+k has vertex (h, k).]
opening downward so that it passes through points (0, 3) and (2, 3)
[a = -2, so a < 0, so it opens downward, and points 1 unit away from the vertex in the x-direction will be 2 units below in the y-direction.]
y-intercept (0, 3)
[The y-intercept is where x = 0. Plug that in and find the corresponding y.]
x-intercepts (1+√(5/2), 0) and (1-√(5/2), 0)
[The x-intercepts are where y = 0. Plug that in and solve for x.]
As with that other one I discussed, graph this lightly, and flip the parts below the x-axis to get the graph of
y = |-2(x-1)2+5|
[You should get like a W shape and be able to explain why.]
