a bus load of campers stopped at a dairy stand for ice cream. They ordered 69 cones some soft serve at 1.25 each  the rest hard ice cream at 0.50 each. If the total bill was 60.75, how many of each type of ice cream cone was ordered?

Let x = number of soft serve ice cream orders and let y = number of hard ice cream orders. We can set up a system of equations to model this situation:

 

x + y = 69        (69 total orders were placed)

1.25x + 0.5y = 60.75        (soft serve price plus hard ice cream price was $60.75)

 

 

Solve the first equation for x, then plug that into the second equation to solve for y, just like we've done in your other questions. Once you have a value for y, plug it back into the first equation to solve for x.
