Greek took earlier mathematics in their conquests of other lands and built upon them.
One of the biggest things they brought to the table was mathematical proofs. Earlier math used a more inductive reasoning like observed reactions, but the proof asserts that the mathematical statement is always true.
Pythagoras came from this era, and among the work he created was what we know as the Pythagorean Theorem:
a2 + b2 = c2
Another thing that came from this theorem is the appearance of irrational numbers--numbers that cannot be made into fractions. This concept helped bridge the way into geometrics.
