When you subtract a negative, you get a positive.

(Think of it like this: If you face North, turn around to face South, then walk backwards, you are still walking North.)

 

3 - 10 + 6 + 5 + - 7

 

Similarly, when you add a negative you're simply subtracting:

3 - 10 + 6 + 5 - 7

 

We can still combine similar parts help ease the calculations:

5 + 6 = 11

11 - 10 = 1

 

3 + 1 - 7

4 - 7

-3

 

Again, you can still just move from left to right and you'll end up at the same point, but I hope this shows how you can make the numbers easier on yourself.
