A rectangular table is four times as long as it is wide. The area is 36ft2 , find the length and width

Let x be the width, and 4x be the length. Since the area is 36 ft2,

 

(4x)(x) = 36

4x^2 = 36

x^2  = 9

 

width x = 3 ft

length 4x = 12 ft
