Since you say this is 2nd grade math, let me put it to you in terms for a second grader. A square has 4 sides and 4 angles that are all the same. A rhombus is basically a diamond, or a slanted, stretched square. I hope that helps.

I would like to add a few properties of Rhombus and square here..
Rhombus: 1)The sides of a rhombus are all congruent (the same length.) 2)Opposite angles of a rhombus are congruent (the same size and measure.) 3)Area: 1/2(a*b), where a and b are the length of the diagonals.
Square: 1)The sides of a square are all congruent (the same length.) 2)All angles of a square are congruent (the same size and measure.) 3)Area=x^2, where x is the length of one side.
If you skew a square to one direction, then it is a rhombus(a distorted square, where all the sides are of the same lengths but the angles are nolonger 90 degree.) Also, I second Jeff with the statement a square is always a rhombus but a rhombus is not always a square.

Hi, Adiaha.
A square and a rhombus both have 4 sides that are all the same length, but a square has to have "square corners" (like the corners of this text box). A rhombus doesn't have to have square corners. Sorry I can't draw anything here, but a rhombus is often drawn to look like a diamond or a tilting square.
Technically, a square is a rhombus with right angles.

I don't mean to disagree with Shaun, but he's said some things that aren't exactly right. A Rhombus always has four equal sides; a square always has four equal sides. A square always has four 90 degree angles. The angles of a rhombus can be any measure (each pair of opposite angles will be equal, and all four will always add up to 360). So yes, a square is always a rhombus, but a rhombus is not always a square.

A square is a type of Rhombus, however a Rhombus is not necessarily a square. A Rhombus is a shape that has four sides and four angles, and each side is the same length. The angles of a Rhombus can be varying degrees. A square is a Rhombus because it has four sides, and each side is the same length, however a square has a further definition as a shape that has four equal angles of 90 degrees.
Therefore, a square is a Rhombus, however a Rhombus is not necessarily a square.
