Choose Traditional Sightreading, Improvisation, or Both!
I've taught kids as young as 5 and some had the focus and attention to do well at a lesson and practice daily at home. Others did not. What I've seen repeatedly is a nine year old newbie, within a year, catch up with a nine year old who's been taking lessons since age 5. I'm guessing it's because the hand size, focus level, and general maturity are drastically advanced by age nine. The myth is that one must start piano around age 6, but some of the most amazing players didn't start until young adults.
