math question please answer

Cost of Jeans - Please Respond

Hello Class -

   Excellent discussions!!  Based on the discussion responses, it seems it doesn't matter whether you add the 25% price increase (or multiply the price by 1.25) first to the base or first subtract the 25% discount first (or multiply by .75), as you still get $40.26  Example:  $42.95 x 1.25 x .75 = $40.26 OR $42.95 x .75 x 1.25 = $40.26

     Why is this the case and might this have anything to do with the (A x B ) X C = A x (B x C) associative property of multiplication?
