First let's identify each part of the question. 338 is the total amount of people on the trip. 42 is how many people one bus holds. We need to find out "how many groups of 42 go into 338."
We can do this in two ways.
- Count groups of 42 until we get as close to 338 as we can: 42+42+42 ... +42 = 336
- This ends up being eight groups of 42. Because there are 2 people not accounted for (338 - 336 = 2), you would need an extra bus to sit the extra 2. So you need 9 buses (8+1 = 9) in total.
- Divide 338 by 42 (using long division or a calculator): 338/42 = 8 r 2 or 8.04...
- Because 42 does not go evenly into 338 (there is a remainder/ there is an extra decimal), you would have to round up to 9 buses (you can't have a "decimal" or "fractional" sized bus)
