The primary reason for the EU was economic, hence the introduction of the Euro. It was designed to level the playing field among the poorer nations such as Greece and Spain with the wealthier ones such as Germany and France. NATO is the primary military unit formed with the United States in order to deter Soviet Union and then Russian Federation aggression especially to help protect the border countries who were most vulnerable to Communist interference. Today while no longer Communist the Russian Federation continues to meddle in the affairs of border counties such as Georgia and Ukraine.
