bob drove from home to work at 60 mph. after work the traffic was heavier, and he drove home at 25 mph. his driving time to and from work was 1 hour and 8 minutes. how far does he live from his job?

Let x = one way distance to work

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time)  so, Time = Distance/Rate

 

Time to work + Time driving home = Total time

 

x/60 + x/25 = 1.1333333333  (1 hour 8 minutes=1.133333333 hr)

 

Multiply both sides by the LCD, 300:

 

5x + 12x = 340

 

17x = 340

 

x = 20 miles
