Hi Hailey.
I think you meant to enter 5x = 8 because the narrative indicates that involves an exponential equation.
Since 8 is NOT a power of 5, we're going to get an irrational number.
In fact, the exact answer is x = log5 8.
I have been coaching SAT prep for 18 years and NEVER has there been any indication that they've ever even heard of logarithms.
This problem might be on the ACT. Is that where you found it?
On the other hand, if you could make one typo I suppose you might have made another.
Could the original question perhaps be, 2x = 8?
See in this instance 8 is 23, and therefore x would be 3.
