A mile is a measure of linear distance. A square mile is a measure of area corresponding to a square that is one mile wide by one mile long. A cubic mile is a measure of volume corresponding to a cube that is one mile long by one mile wide by one mile high.

Well a square mile could be 2 miles by 0.5 miles. The variance applies to cubic miles also. It is a poorly worded question.
