What's an easy way to multiple big numbers by 5?

To multiply any number by 5, you just divide the number by 2 (cut it in half), then multiply by 10 (add a zero to the end). Numbers greater than 12 tend to get harder and harder. So, here's an example. What is 68 x 5?

First, divide 68 by 2 and you get 34. Now multiply by 10 (add a zero to 34). The answer is: 340.

What if the number is not divisible by 2?

It seems to work with all numbers, including decimals, but the division by 2 becomes combersome with numbers like 42.79 x 5. 42.79/2 = 21.395; 21.395 x 10 = 213.95 (same as 42.79 x 5).

For odd whole numbers, it's easier to multiply by 10 first because the product is even, then divide by 2. For example, 79 x 5 = 790/2 = 395.
