Are 6/8 and 9/12 actually equivalent and why?

Are 6/8 and 9/12 not equivalent because there is no whole number you can multiply both parts of 6/8 to get 9/12?

Doesn't need to be a whole number. In this case if you mult numerator and denom of 6/8 by 1.5 or 1 1/2, you'll get 9/12. Conversely, can reduce 6/8 to 3/4 (divide by 2's) and reduce 9/12 to 3/4 by dividing by 3's. So both are equivalent to 3/4.
