Why is 19 - 8 / 2 + 6 = 21?

According to my understanding of PEMDAS, it should be solved as follows:
First, division: 8 / 2 = 4
Second, addition: 4 + 6 = 10
Third, subtraction: 19 - 10.
Which should equal 9.

If you wanted to do the addition first remember that there's the subtraction sign in front, so what you have there is a negative 4:
19 - 8 / 2 + 6
19 - 4 + 6    (-4 + 6 = 2)
19 + 2 = 21

Thank you!  That was my issue.  I knew PEMDAS is the formula, but I see now multiplication & division, as well as addition & subtraction, are equally important, but are solved according to how it appears in the equation.  Thank you!
