The distance around a triangle is 40 centimeters. If two sides are equal and the length of the third side is 6 centimeters, what is the length of each of the other two sides?

Aaryan C.

The triangle has three sides, out of which one side is of known length (6 cm) and the other two are both of equal, unknown length (call it x). Since the three sides add to 40 cm, we say that x cm + x cm + 6 cm = 40 cm. Combining like terms, we find that 2x cm + 6 cm = 40 cm. Subtracting 6 cm from each side, we find that 2x cm = 34 cm. Dividing by two, we find that x cm = 17 cm, so the other two sides are 17 cm long each.
