Making Sense of Math! Elementary and Special Ed Tutor, M.Ed.
I would prefer to use an equation. The next step would be to determine the correct math operation which sometimes is confusing. For this problem we were not given the cost so we let's say the movie tickets were $10 each. Now I would draw a simple picture or diagram to help make sense of the problem.
Here's a list of my friends and the cost of their movie tickets.

With this image, I can see I need to add 10 eight times or simply multiply
8 x 10
And 8 x 10=80, so my answer is $80.
