Hi Abigail,
I hope I can help you understand this problem. To start, I encourage my students to draw a simple diagram of the problem to make sense of it. Here's an example
__________________________________
Danielle's total walk 2 miles
__________________________________
? what we don't know
_______________
1 1/4 miles that she
has already walked
_______________
So if we start with how much she's walked so far, 2 miles, and take away (subtract) what she has already walked, 1 1/4 miles we will know what she still needs to walk.
This will be our equation for this problem 2 - 1 1/4=?
There are many ways to solve subtraction problems with fractions, let's try turning 2 wholes into a fraction
2/1- 1 1/4. Now we need common denominators, so we will multiply the numerator and denominator of 2/1 both by 4 and our new equation will be 8/4-1 1/4. We are not ready to solve yet, since we need to turn 1 1/4 into an improper fraction, 5/4. Then we have 8/4-5/4=3/4 (we only subtract the numerators, the denominators remain the same). Our answer is 3/4 mile, always remember for word problems we need to include a unit in our answer.
Hope this helps, Abigail!
