Assuming this question is asking to find out how much of the garden has broccoli and peppers growing in it, we would do the following.
We know that 1/4 of the garden has broccoli and
2/3 of the garden has peppers, we need to add up those 2 fractions to find out how much of the entire garden has broccoli and peppers.
Step 1 is to write out mathematically what needs to be done: 1/4 + 2/3
We also know that in order to add fractions denominators need to be the same, so Step 2 would be exactly that, make denominators the same. To do so, we multiply each fraction by a whole represented by the denominator from the other fraction. so 1/4 would be multiplied by 3/3 and 2/3 would be multiplied by 4/4.
1 * 3 3
-- -- = --
4 * 3 12
2 * 4 8
-- -- = --
4 * 4 12
Now we have both fractions with a common denominator and in Step 3 we add them up to find out how much of the garden is occupied by broccoli and peppers.
3/12 + 8/12 = 11/12
Answer: 11/12 of the garden is occupied by broccoli and peppers.
Hope this helps.
