How do you solve a math riddle by "working backwards"?

For example, how to you "work backwards" to solve this riddle?

Add 9 to me. Then multiply by 3. If you subtract 16 and then add 7, you get 27. What number am I?

Carefully starting from the back end keeping in mind the rules for subtraction and following PEMDAS: 27 = +7-16+3(me+9). It actually says 27 is what you get from plus 7 minus 16 plus 3 times the quantity me plus 9. It's also useful to try and recite it from back to front. As indicated below this is a little tricky 3(me+9) - 16 is the same statement as -16 + 3(me+9). PEMDAS requires that you work through the parentheses first. I hope this helps
