any parallel line has the same slope. the slope is the x term's coefficient if the equation is solved for y
y=3x-1 has slope =3. a parallel line through the point (-3,5) is 3 = (y-5)/(x+3) or y = 3x + 14
a perpendicular line has a negative inverse slope. negative inverse of 3 is -1/3.
the equation of the perpendicular line is: y=-x/3 + 4
