divide by 4

1.4x + 1.3y = 36.8

1.7x + 1.3y = 37.9

subtract 1st from 2nd equation to eliminate 1.3y

.3x = 1.1

divide by .3

x = 1.1/.3 = 11/3

x = 11/3 = about 3.7

1.3y = 36.8- 1.4(11/3) = 36.8 - 15.4/3 = 110.4 -15.4)/3 = 95/3

y = (95/3)/1.3 = 95/3.9 = 950/39 = about 24.4

(x,y) = (11/3, 950/39) = about (3.7, 24.4)

1.7x + 1.3y = 37.9

1.7(3.7) + 1.3(24.4) = about 6.3 + 31.6 = 37.9

1.4x + 1.3y = 36.8

1.4(3.7) + 1.3(24.4) = 5.1 + 31.7 = 36.8
