x + 3 = 8
subtract 3 from both sides (whatever you do to one side, do the same thing to the other side, and the equality still holds. It's an "equality" so treat both sides equally)
x+3 -3 = 8-3
x = 5
another way people look at the problem is you can move a number across the equality sign, move it from left side to the right side, but change its sign. move 3 from left side to right side, by changing its sign from +3 to -3
then x+3 = 8
x = 8-3
x= 5
check the answer
plug the answer into the original equation, replace x by 5
x + 3 = 8
5 + 3 = 8
8 = 8
