Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
the problem is a little ambiguous
two or maybe three possibilities
1st: x > (7/2)(11)
x > 77/2
x > 38.5 or 38 1/2
2nd: x > (7)(11/2)
x > 77/2
x > 38.5 which is the same final answer
but "by" is a little ambiguous too. Usually it means multiply, as in a rectangle is 2 by 4, with area = 2(4) = 8
but possibly "by' means add. if so, then
x > 7/2 + 11
x > 3.5 + 11
x > 14.5
or x > (7+11)/2
x > 18/2
x > 9
38.5, 14.5 or 9
My guess is x > 38.5
(it is also true regardless how you interpret the problem. If x > 38.5, x is also greater than 9 or 14.5, so you can't say x>38.5 is incorrect. You should at least get major partial credit)

Hi Omobolade! The easiest way to do this is to translate the words into an equation. Then we can solve for the variable. The phrase "what number" becomes our variable x. "is" means equals. "Half of 7" is just 7/2. "Greater than half of 7 by 11" means that we are going to add 7/2 and 11. With this information, we can write the sentence as the equation x = 7/2 + 11. To solve this, we just need to find a common denominator: x = 7/2 + 22/2. Finally just add the fractions to get x = 29/2.01/09/22
