The use of common standards provide organizations a way to verify a design; the primary role of design standards is to ensure that essential requirements are being met. This includes safety, uniformity, serviceability, durability, and I’m many cases, form, fit, and function. A common standard also allows for one to evaluate improvements and cost savings while performing research and development as this decision during design could impact construction, cost, schedule, manufacturing, quality, and systems integration.
One example of the importance of standards includes purchasing a common part from a vendor. Without a standard requirement for that part to design to, you could receive a different type of part from different vendors.

Hi Lutumika, Think of book of standards like a Rules-book. Every manufacturer has to follow certain protocols to ensure that their designs operate in a safe and efficient manner. For example, IEC 60601-1-2 is for the Medical industry. All medical equipment manufacturers must adhere to this standard, to assure the customer that the equipment follows the required safety precautions. Hope this helps!12/15/21
