Hello Kimberly,
Let's call x: the number of bags of candy.
Since there were 6 more bags of cookies than candy sold, the number of cookies sold can be represented by x+6.
Total sales were $79.00, so cookies sales + candy sales = $79.00
Candy sales = (Cost of one bag of candy) * (number of candy bags sold) = 8.50 *x
Cookies sales = (Cost of one bag of cookies) * (number of cookies bags sold) = 4.50*(x+6) = 4.50*x + 27
Adding both to get $79.00 in total sales: 8.50x + 4.50x + 27 = 79
Adding like terms: 13x + 27 = 79
Subtract 27 on both sides: 13x = 52
Divide both sides by 13: x = 4 ---> so the drama club sold 4 bags of candy.
Since the drama club sold 6 more bags of cookies than candy, you can figure out how many of those were sold.
Cheers.
