53x1.2 estimated
When you are asked to estimate an answer, I think the best way is to round one of the numbers. In this case, round 1.2 to the nearest whole number and then multiply.
A few things to remember when rounding:
- Look at the digit directly to the right of the place you are rounding to. In this case, we are rounding to the ones place, so we would look at the number directly after the decimal point (2)
- If that number is 4 or less, the digit you are rounding to stays the same.
- If that number is 5 or more, the digit you are rounding to increases by 1.
A couple examples:
23 to the nearest ten: I would look at the 3 in this case. Since 3 is 4 or less, that tells me that the 2 stays the same, so the answer is 20.
768 to the nearest ten: I would look at the 8 in this case. Since 8 is 5 or more, that tells me that the 6 increases by one, so the answer is 770
You can apply this same concept to decimals. Good luck!
