A textbook store sold a combined total of 340 sociology and math textbooks in a week. The number of sociology textbooks sold was 58 more than the number of math textbooks sold. How many textbooks of each type were sold?

First subtract 58 from the total amount of books. Then divide that number (282) by 2 to represent the two subject books. That should give you 141. This will be your math book total. Then add in the extra 58 to the other 141 books and this will be your sociology total. Be sure to check your work to make sure one is 58 more than the other and that the two books add up to the 340 total.
