P(x) = 6 + .5x
P(x) represents "the total price of the trip if x miles are traveled"
6 represents the fee for picking up the passenger.
.5 represents the 50 cents.
x represents the number of miles.
The six is in there a constant because it's a flat fee (it's always going to be at least six dollars, regardless of how many miles are traveled). Then we add the per-mile cost onto the six dollars. The per-mile cost is represented by .5x because it's fifty cents (.5 or .50) per (times) mile (x)
