x = the first number
y = the second number
Let's say y is the greater number and x is the smaller number.
y = 5x + 8 "greater of two numbers is 8 more than 5 times the smaller"
x + y = 68 This is given. The sum of these two numbers is 68.
x + 5x + 8 = 68 Substitute y = 5x + 8 into the second equation.
6x + 8 = 68
6x = 60
x = 10
y = 5(10) + 8
y = 58
The numbers are 10 and 58.
