This one is not as complicated as it seems, it just requires you to know some math words.
There are keywords in math that tell us what operation(s) we're going to be using. Here are several examples:
Here are some examples of addition key words:
- add
- altogether
- both
- combine
- in all
- increase
- increased by
- larger
- larger than
- longer
- longer than
- more
- more than
- perimeter
- plus
- sum
- together
- total
Here are some examples of subtraction key words:
- change
- decreased
- difference
- fewer
- gave away
- How many more…?
- How many less…?
- left
- left over
- less
- less than
- minus
- remain
- shorter than
- smaller than
- take away
Here are some examples of multiplication key words:
- area
- cubed
- double
- each
- groups
- per
- product
- quadruple
- rows
- squared
- times
- triple
Here are some examples of division key words:
- average
- divide
- each
- equal group
- fourth
- half
- quarter
- quotient
- ratio
- share
- separate
- split
- third
Now, back to your problem
Solve for 18 more than the product of 16 and 2
We see that more than means addition, and product of means multiplication. Let's try the same set up with some different numbers
Solve for 12 more than the product of 15 and 4.
12 more than--- we have +12 --- the product of 15 and 4 we have 15x4
Remember order of operations PEMDAS [Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)]. says that we do multiplication before addition.
We can re-write the problem as (15x4) +12
15x4 = 60
60+12 = 72
So 12 more than the product of 15 and 4 is 72
I hope you can apply this to your problem!
