Actually, there aren't any "irregular" words in English, there are only words which don't conform to how most people were taught to read. Our writing system only partially represents our pronunciation..The system is governed by three things in this order:
1. structure; that is, base words such as "play" and affixes such as <re-> and <-ful>
2. Etymology (history of the spelling)
3. Phonology.
This is how linguists (people who study language) have understood English for years. It is our educational system and people who market reading programs who have convinced us otherwise. Also, the meaning of the term "phonetics" is actually "the physiology of how we produce sounds that we recognize as having meaning.
