In Texas, the position you’re describing would usually be called a correctional officer, detention officer, or jailer, depending on the agency.
If you want to work specifically in a county jail, look for positions such as County Jailer or Detention Officer with a county sheriff’s office. These employees work inside the jail supervising inmates, maintaining security, conducting searches, monitoring housing areas, handling inmate movement, and responding to incidents.
In Texas, county jailers generally obtain a County Jailer license through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). This is different from becoming a licensed peace officer whose normal duties might include patrol, traffic stops, and responding to calls on the road.
So if your goal is “I want to work in law enforcement, but I specifically want to stay inside the jail rather than patrol the streets,” I would recommend searching for County Jailer/Detention Officer positions at Texas sheriff’s offices. You do not necessarily need to become a patrol police officer first.
