L=W+3
A=LW = (W+3)W = W^2 + 3W = 40
W^2 +3W = 40 complete the square
take half of 3 and square it: (3/2)^2 = 9/4. add it to both sides
W^2 + 3W + 9/4 = 40 + 9/4 = 169/4
(W-+3/2)^2 = 169/4
W +3/2 = 13/2
W = -3/2 + 13/2 = 10/2 = 5 feet wide
L=W+3 = 5+3 = 8 feet long
dimensions are 8 by 5 feet
8x5 = 40
