Jane needed to use 3 pounds 11 ounces of clay to make a bowl and twice as much to make a vase. If she had a 12 pound bag of clay available, did she have enough clay to make both items?

First determine how much clay will be needed for the vase. Since it takes twice the amount of clay as for the bowl, she would need the following amount for the vase:

2 • 3 pounds 11 ounces = 6 pounds 22 ounces

Recall that 16 ounces = 1 pounds. Therefore 6 pounds 22 ounces is is equal to 7 pounds 6 ounces.

Then the total for the bowl and the vase will be:

Bowl + vase = 3 pounds 11 ounces + 7 pounds 6 ounces = 10 pounds 17 ounces = 11 pounds 1 ounce

Since Jane has a 12 pound bag, she will have enough clay.
