Math Question 4

Alexandra and Savannah are 280 miles apart, traveling towards each other. If Savannah travels 20 mph and Alexandra travels 15 mph how long until they meet?

Paul may have a point. Let me give you an idea of how to think about this problem. First, it helps to sketch the distance between the two people as a straight line and to place the point where they meet closest to the slower person, in this case Alexandra. The scale is not important; this is simply an attempt to help us visualize the problem and find a strategy for solving it. Alexandra and Savannah will travel the SAME AMOUNT of TIME to get to that meeting place. In that amount of time, Savannah will have traveled FURTHER, because she is traveling FASTER. You can form two equations using A to represent the distance that Alexandra will travel and S to represent the distance that Savannah will go before they meet. The first equation is: A + S = 280. I will let you take it from there!
