asked 03/09/21Specific Tutoring for ADHD Brain
Hi there,
I am looking of someone to help me in Music Theory, but am afraid of the challenges they may face with my ADHD. It requires patience and an open mind for teaching methods. Do you know anyone that is experienced with that?

Certified and Experienced Elementary and Special Education Teacher
Hi, Falon,
I have a special education background and was involved in choir at school for years during middle school and high school. I also took piano lessons for many years. Music theory was always one of my favorite things to learn. I agree that it takes a lot of patience to work with someone who has ADHD. Best of luck to you!

Engaging Elementary Tutor who Enjoys Math
Hi Falon. I understand your concern with finding the right tutor because you have ADHD. You are not alone. When first speaking with a potential tutor, share your concerns. Let the tutor know what your needs are and describe the type of interaction you need. You may also want the tutor to do a little reading up on ADHD before your session. Many people have ADHD today and we all need to be better informed so that we can be more effective tutors.
Hi Falon,
I have tutored students with ADD and ADHD and I agree with Patrick R. that learning music theory can be very fun and engaging and may even be easier than learning a topic that is only visual because it engages more than one sense. I also use exercises and lessons on musictheory.net and also customize exercises that students can collaborate on using the whiteboard/text editor tools on Wyzant. Getting your hands on a keyboard or other instrument to help you hear, see and feel the sound as you're learning music theory really helps reinforce the learning in my experience; and also just have fun and take things at your own pace!
Hope this helps and is encouraging to you!

Berklee Tutor for Piano, Guitar, Theory and Music Production
Hi Falon! I also have ADHD but I think it has helped me with learning music especially. For students with ADHD, ask a lot of questions to keep them engaged. I like to do exercises on musictheory.net with them because it is something that has helped me a lot!
I would curate an exercise for them based on their needs and their level. I would start off by doing the exercises with them whether it's note reading or pitch detection. It's a very engaging and fun way of learning core music. It's kind of like playing a game because you can turn on "challenge" mode and see how many answers you can get correctly in under a minute or something like that!
Hope this helps!
