Hi Aaliyah! The word percent means "out of 100". There are two ways we can solve this problem. The first way is to change the percent to a decimal and then multiply. The second way to solve this problem is to change the percent to a fraction and multiply. See the explanations of both ways below!
Method 1: Change the percent to a decimal...
Problem- What is 80% of 5 cupcakes?
Step 1: Change the percent to a decimal by moving the decimal over two places to the left. 80% is the same thing as saying 80.0 so you need to move the decimal to the left two place values. It should now be 0.80
Step 2: Multiply and solve. 0.80 x 5=4
Method 2: Change the percent to a fraction...
Step 1: Change the percent to a fraction by putting the number in the numerator and 100 in the denominator. Remember that percents are numbers represented out of 100, which is why we put 100 in the denominator. It should now read 80/100. The 5 should also be represented as a fraction of 5/1. We left a 1 underneath the fraction because it is a whole number already.
Step 2: Multiply from left to right!
80/100 x 5/1.
First, you will multiply 80 x 5 = 400 (This will be the new numerator).
Second, you will multiply the denominators. 100 x 1 = 100 (This is the new denominator).
Now you have the fraction 400/100.
Step 3: Simplify!
400/100 can be simplified easiest by 100! You know this because both the numerator and denominator have two 0's at the end! By simplifying by 100 on both the numerator and denominator, we are left with 4/1, which is also known as 4!

When you want a %; multiply; move the decimal.
