There's a few ways to answer this question, but I'll try to show you two.
The first is to get up a ratio:
200 words x words
------------- = ------------
4.5 minutes 22.5 minutes
Simply cross multiply and you should get 4.5x = 4,500. Divide to isolate x and you have your number!
The other method, which is similar in concept is trying to find how many words in 1 minute. So, same original ratio:
200 words
-------------
4.5 minutes
But this time you divide 200 / 4.5. You'll get a repetitive number (44.4444). However that is the equivalent to:
44.444 words
------------
1 minute
Therefore you can take your answer and multiply it by 22.5 to get the total words in that many minutes.
Personally I like the first method best since it cuts to the chase. Although I like to share the second method as it helps some students break down the process more clearly.
