asked 02/02/21Using a variable and an equation
You take your car to a mechanic and they tell you that it is fixed, but that the cost of the part it needed was $40 more than three times the cost of the labor to install it. If your total bill was $380, how much did you have to pay for the part?

Part= P
Labor= L
P=3L+40
Toal equaion P+L= 380
Use substitution to plug in P
3L+ 40+ L= 380
4L+40=380
4L=340
L= 85
Hence labor is 85
Hence lets plug in 85 to both equation to check
P= 3(85)+40
P= 295
ALso P+L= 380
85+295= 380 makes sense!!
Cost for part is $295!! Answer
also part for labor $85 but not asking that
