Question

The senior classes at High School A and High School B planned separate trips to the indoor

climbing gym. The senior class at High School A rented and filled 2 vans and 7 buses with 212

students. High School B rented and filled 2 vans and 2 buses with 72 students. Every van had

the same number of students in it as did the buses. How many students can a van carry? How

many students can a bus carry?

2v +7b = 212

2v +2b = 72

5b = 140

b = 28 buses

v = 8 vans

8 students per van and 28 students per bus

10s per van then 192/7 = 27 3/7 for A, close but off by 1 3/7

try 11s per van then 25 per bus for B and

11s per van then 212-22)/7 =190/7 =27 1/7 worse

ty 9s per van then 27 per bus for B

and 9s per van then (212-18)/7 = 194/7 = 27 4/9, off by 1/3 very close

try 8s per van, then 28 per van for B and

8s per van, then 196/7 = 28 per van for B
