The formula for perimeter of a rectangle is 2(L + W).
You know the length is twice the width, so we can call that 2w and let w be the width.
27 = 2(2w + w)
27 = 2(3w) first add the parentheses
27 = 6w. Then multiply
Divide both sides by 6 to find the width
27 ÷ 6 = 4.5
The width is 4.5 yards
The length is 2 x 4.5 = 9 yards
