HELP!! this is an algerba question

A student bought 6 pens and 2 notebooks and spent $5.00. Another students bought 3 pens and 4 notebooks for $5.50. What is the cost of a pen? What is the cost of a notebook

6P + 2N = 500

3P+4N = 550

multiply the 2nd equation by 2, and subtract the 1st equation from that

6P + 8N = 1100

6P + 2N = 500

6N = 600

N = 600/6 = 100 cents = $1 for a notebook

6P = 500-2(100) = 300

P = 300/6 = 50 cents for a pen
