Question

A bookcase is to be constructed as shown in the figure below. The height of the bookcase is 3 feet longer than the length of a shelf. If 24 feet of lumber is available for the entire unit (including the shelves, but NOT the back of the bookcase), find the length and height of the unit.

Answer 1

h=3+L

2h +4L =24

h +2L = 12

3+L +2L = 12

3L = 9

L = 3 feet Long

h = 6 feet high

if 4 shelves, similar to another posted problem, but this time no diagram, so we're guessing

but the numbers come out so nicely, odds are this is correct
