Since the larger number is 13 more than 4 times the smaller, we can write the following expression to represent the larger: 4x + 13
Since the sum of the two numbers is 203, we can write and solve the following equation to find the smaller number first: x + 4x + 13 = 203
5x + 13 = 203
5x + 13 - 13 = 203 - 13
5x = 190
5x/5 = 190/5
x = 38
The smaller number is 38
