Question

To make punch for the class party, Mrs. Lui mixed 1 1/3 cups orange juice, 3/4 cup apple juice, 2/3 cup cranberry juice, and 3 4 cup lemon-lime soda. Mixed together, how many cups of punch does the recipe make? 

Extension: Each serving is 1 cup. How many batches of this recipe does Mrs. Lui need to serve her 20 students?

For the first part, we will add up all the fractions since its asking us how many cups of punch can be made mixing all.

4/3 (orange Juice) + 3/4 apple juice + 2/3 cranberry juice + 3/4 lemon lime juice.

Making denominators equal:-

16/12+9/12+8/12+9/12=42/12=3 and 1/2 cups.

Extension:-Since we have to divide it into 20 students, we will divide students with number of cups solved above.

20/3.5=5.7 or 6 batches are needed to serve it.

So for the first one we just have to add all the fractions together to get how many cups of punch:

4/3+3/4+2/3+3/4 = (make same denominator of 12) 16/12+9/12+8/12+9/12 = 42/12 = 3 and 1/2 cups

Extension: we need to do the 20 students divided by the amount she makes each recipe which we found above:

20/3.5= 5 and 5/7 or 6 times the recipe
