Hannah and her friend are training to run in a 2-mile race. On Monday, Hannah ran 1/2 mile. On Tuesday, she ran 1/5 mile farther than she ran on Monday. How far did she run on Tuesday?
If her friend ran ¾ mile on Tuesday, how many miles did the girls run in all on Tuesday?

The first step to answering these questions is to find a common denominator among the fractions you are given in the word problem. Once you have found it, change the fractions to have the same denominator and their equivalent numerators. Then identify the operation you are to use (add, subtract, multiply, divide) based on the word/words of the problem to find out how far Hannah ran on Tuesday.
The second question has two parts: first, change the given fraction to one with a common denominator like the ones above.. Adjust the numerator. Secondly, find the word/words that identify the operation you need to answer the question. Do the math, and remember to include the unit of measure (miles, feet, etc.) in your answer.

Hi Sam,Think of the equation this way... Monday 1/2mile Tuesday 1/2 mile plus 1/5mile. To find out how far Hannah ran you must find the common denominator, which is 10. Change the fractions so they can be added having the same denominators. !/2 +1/5= 5/10+2/10= 7/10 of a mile Tuesday Hannah's friend ran 3/4 mile . Find a new common denominator for 7/10 and 3/4 mile. 7/10+3/4= denominator is 20, 14/20+15/20= 29/20, or 1 and 9/20 miles together on Tuesday only. Hope this was helpful11/17/20
