T = number of cards Tom has
M = number of cards Max has
T + M = 40 cards
T has 4 times as many cards as Max therefore T = 4M
Substitute 4M for T in the equation T + M = 40 cards
4M + M = 40
combine like terms or 4M + M which is the same as 4M + 1M which equals 5M
so
5M = 40
5 times the number of cards Max has equals 40
5M = 40 cards
Divide both sides by 5
5M / 5 = 40 cards / 5
5 / 5 = 1
1M = M
5M / 5 = 40 cards / 5
40 /5 = 8
M = 8 cards
To find out how many Tom has substitute the 8 for M and solve.
T = 4 M
T = 4(8)
T = 32
Tom has 32 cards
Max has 8 cards
