A rectangular piece of metal is 10in longer than it is wide. Squares with sides 2in long are cut from the four corners, and the flaps are folded upwar to form an open box. If the volume of the box is 832in^3 what were the original dimensions

Let x = original width

    x + 10 = original length

 

Dimensions of box:  width = x - 2 - 2 = x - 4

                                 length = x + 10 - 2 - 2 = x + 6

                                 height = 2

 

2(x - 4)(x + 6) = 832

  (x - 4)(x + 6) = 416

  x² + 2x - 24 = 416

  x² + 2x - 440 = 0

  (x + 22)(x - 20) = 0

 

x = 20 or x = -22

 

Since x can't be negative, x = 20

 

Original width = x = 20"

Original length = x + 10 = 30"
